Clervaux, venue of the second world War

The Battle of the Bulge, also known under the name of the German commander-in-chief Gerd v. Rundstedt, lasted almost 2 months. It was the biggest and most confusing battles of the Second World War. After this battle Luxembourg was finally freed from German occupation.

On 16th December 1944 German troops under General Field Marshall von Rundstedt's command attacked the thin American line of defence alongside the rivers Sauer and Our. The population of the North was mainly evacuated, but a lot of civilians fell victim to the attack nevertheless. General Patton moved his third army from the Saar to Luxembourg and was able to recapture the North of the country in hard battles.

On 25th January 1945 Clervaux was again under American control. Vianden was the last town in Luxembourg to be liberated by the troops on 12th February 1945. In the following months the Germen resistance broke down for good.
