The Family of Man

Since 1994, the largest photographic exhibition of all time, ‘The Family of Man’, has been housed in the perfectly restored medieval castle of Clervaux, itself a testament to the city’s historical past.This unique exhibit explores many facets of humanity, from love and birth, faith in humanity, work and family to the always dramatic war and peace.

UNESCO World heritage site

In October 2003, the exhibition was registered as a UNESCO world heritage site. The agreement of the people. This impressive photographic exhibition was curated in 1955 by Luxembourg native, Edward Steichen, for the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). After its huge success in New York, the photographs were on a world tour for many years. In 1966 the last version of this travelling exhibit was shown in the Grand Duchy by virtue of its benefactors in the United States.

The collection consists of 503 photos by 273 artists from 68 countries, and was put together by Steichen for the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMa). It first celebrated its opening in 1955. The collection contains pictures of famous photographers such as Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dorothea Lange, Robert Doisneau, August Sander and Ansel Adam. It was devised as a portrait of human life, from love and joy, to war, illness or deprivation.

In 2010 it was decided that the collection should undergo a thorough restoration. At the same time the exhibition space at the castle underwent renovation work. Since the 6th July 2013, the Family of Man exhibition is opened  for visitors.

Opening Hours:

From 2 March, 2016 to 1 January, 2017 Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 18:00 (Annual leave from 2 January 2017 to 28 February 2017)
Closed on Monday and Tuesday, except public holidays
Wednesday to Sunday mornings from 10:00 to 12:00 reserved for groups and educational activities.

26th December to 1 January from 12:00 to 18:00 (31.12 until 16:00)

Free up to 21 years of age
Entrance fee includes use of a multimedia guide (iPad mini).

Multimedia guide

The use of the iPad mini provides visitors with an audio guide, which also features interviews and further information on the collection, its history and layout, as well as video documents. The iPad guide is available in French, German and English.

Guided tours

Free guided tour every Sunday at 15:00.
